CHAPTER 10

“I hope you don’t mind if we head straight back to Laxey,” Andrew said when they reached his car. “I have a very long email to compose if I’m going to ask Sean everything that we discussed.”

“That’s fine,” Bessie assured him. “I need to ring a friend, anyway.”

“Assuming I can finish my email in a reasonable amount of time, would you like to go somewhere for dinner?” Andrew asked as he parked outside of Bessie’s cottage.

“I ate a large lunch, so I’m not certain I’ll want much dinner.”

“I didn’t eat that much lunch, but I did eat quite a few fairy cakes,” Andrew said with a laugh. “I probably won’t want much dinner, either.”

“Let’s worry about it when you’ve finished your email,” Bessie suggested.

“I’ll be back around six, then,” Andrew replied.

Bessie nodded and then walked to her cottage and unlocked her door. She put her fairy cakes in the refrigerator, hoping that would keep them fresh for as long as possible. Then she pressed “play” on the answering machine that was blinking frantically.

Five minutes later, she’d deleted three messages that were of no real interest to her. The last one was from Mavis.

“Ah, Bessie, ring me when you have a minute,” was all that the woman had said.

Unfortunately, when Bessie tried to ring, no one answered her call. After pacing around the kitchen for several minutes, Bessie tried Mavis’s number again. After letting it ring a dozen times, she was forced to admit defeat. Grabbing a book, she curled up in her sitting room and read until Andrew knocked just before six.

“Did you get the email sent?” she asked as she let him in to Treoghe Bwaane.

“It was more a short novel than an email,” he replied with a laugh. “I’m not certain I’ve ever sent such a long and involved email to anyone before.”

“We have a lot of questions for the man.”

“Did you reach your friend?”

Bessie frowned. “She wasn’t home when I rang earlier, and then I got rather lost in a book and forgot to try again.”

“I’m not in any rush, if you want to try ringing her now.”

It only took a moment for Bessie to ring the number that she was now close to having memorised. There was no answer.

“She doesn’t have an answering machine?” Andrew asked as Bessie put the phone down.

“Apparently not, although I thought everyone had one these days. I do hope nothing is wrong.”

“Do you want to ring the police and have them check on her?”

“Oh, goodness, no, not yet anyway. I’m sure she’s just out visiting a friend or maybe her son.”

“Should we go and get some dinner, then?”

“I’m not terribly hungry, and I’m sure I’ll want another fairy cake later. I have soup in the freezer that I could reheat, and we could have sandwiches with it,” she offered.

“If you’d rather do that, I won’t say no. A simple meal sounds good after our pub lunch.”

Bessie opened her freezer and began checking the contents. “I have potato and leek soup or chicken with noodles.
